What Are The Environmental Benefits of Broadband?

Broadband connections are becoming more and more the norm, not only in the business world but also in the home. This is, of course, largely driven by the fact that prices for this type of high-speed connection are becoming increasingly affordable, but broadband also fits in well with the fast-paced lifestyles of today. Clearly, broadband brings with it a wealth of benefits for the individual user, but it is also important to consider how this might fit in with an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.
The key environmental disadvantage of broadband is the fact that it can be left on at no extra cost (in terms of call charges) and without tying up a telephone line. This is very convenient for home users wanting to keep an eye on their email, for example, but means that the power usage of the computer is higher than when logging on to the internet was just a brief once or twice a day activity.
From a work perspective, however, broadband has provided the opportunity for some flexible, eco-friendly business practices. Home working, for example, is a much more feasible option thanks to the speed of a broadband connection, this potentially greatly reducing the mileage required for commuting to and from the workplace. In addition, the much more viable option of teleconferencing can reduce business miles both on a national and international scale.
Basically it is important that broadband is used wisely. Business can use it to real environmental advantage and home users can also reduce any negative environmental impact. Staying online unnecessarily should certainly be avoided and it is also worth ensuring that the PCs or laptops themselves are being used in a power-saving way. Check with the manufacturer for the most energy efficient way of using the computer and bear this in mind in along with the basic premise of not using it for the sake of it.
