Types of Dumbwaiters

In the Victorian era, dumbwaiters were used to transport people secretly from one floor to another or to carry food to the masters of the house. Now it is used for entirely different purposes and provides an excellent service to those that need to transport food to a patient in the house or other household items.
Dumbwaiters are available in two designs, manual and electric.
The manual dumbwaiter functions with the pull of a rope. A large pulley is located at the top of the shaft, and the rope is threaded around that pulley. To ensure that the dumbwaiter does not hit or bang itself against the shaft walls, there are tracks in the shaft guide. The speed at which it travels depends on the speed at which the rope is pulled. The best part of the manual dumbwaiters is that they are extremely well engineered and require very little effort to move a full load. They are available in different capacities, from 50 pounds to 100 pounds or more.
The electric dumbwaiters on the other hand are easier to operate when compared to the manual ones. They also have a track system to assist in easy movement. They are powered by an electric motor to raise the dumbwaiter or lower it. They are designed almost like a normal elevator and also have safety brakes and safety interlocks built-in, to prevent them from moving when the door is open.
Both the manual and the electric dumbwaiters operate on similar type of shafts. For obvious reasons, the manual ones are cheaper than the electric ones. They both come with a key to lock them as a safety precaution to keep children from using them when adults are away.
You can also get them custom designed to suit your needs. An electric dumbwaiter will cost anywhere from $3000 to around $7000, and additional cost is charged for the installation.
There can be nothing better than getting a dumbwaiter you have a multilevel house and if you can really afford the cost, going in for an electric one is the ideal thing to do.
