Top 5 Home Remedies For Bad Breath | Home Healthcare

At one point or another, every body has had or will have bad breath. It is also certain that every body will have to eventually deal with someone else that has bad breath. It is embarrassing for those that have it and uncomfortable, at best, for those that have to smell it. So, what causes bad breath and how can you cure it without having to spend a lot of money?

There are several causes for bad breath:

  • Poor oral hygiene is the number one cause for bad breath. Particles of decaying food caught between the teeth, bacteria harboring plaque and food trapped on the tongue, and not brushing the teeth can all be major contributors.
  • Eating certain foods that have a strong natural odor to them such as onions, garlic, and pepperoni, can cause temporary bad breath.
  • Drinking coffee, smoking cigars or cigarettes, and drinking alcohol are three big causes of bad breath.
  • Certain medical problems can cause bad breath. They include but are not limited to constipation, diabetes, tooth decay, gum disease, mouth sores, oral thrush, and sinus infections.
  • Taking certain medications, such as antibiotics or antihistamines, can also contribute to bad breath.

Eliminating bad breath can be as simple as eating a mint, chewing a piece of gum, or gargling with mouthwash. However, if it is due to something other than the food you ate, it might take a little more than that to get rid of it. Besides performing proper oral hygiene such as brushing your teeth, scraping your tongue, flossing after each meal, and seeing your dentist regularly, there are many home remedies that are very effective against bad breath. Below is a list of home remedies that many have found to work very well:

    • Rinse you mouth thoroughly for a minute or two with water after you eat, drink, or smoke.
    • Parsley is a popular home remedy for bad breath because it naturally freshens your breath. Thoroughly chew a sprig of raw parsley. If you prefer you can make a parsley mouthwash by chopping up 3 sprigs of parsley and adding it to 2 cups of boiling water. Let it steep for fifteen to twenty minutes and then strain it. Once it cools a bit, rinse your mouth thoroughly or gargle with it. You can also both of these methods with Eucalyptus leaves.
    • Certain spices have also been found to work well against bad breath caused by the food you eat. Try chewing on some cloves, fennel seeds, cardamom seeds, or anise seeds after eating foods that have a strong natural odor.
    • Fenugreek tea has been said to be great for curing bad breath. Add 1teaspoon of fenugreek seeds to one liter of water and simmer over low heat for approximately fifteen minutes. Strain the mixture and drink up.
    • Eat lots of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables and drink log of fruit and vegetable juice. An apple a day helps keep bad breath away. Raw fruits and vegetables work as natures toothbrush because they help remove stray food particles and kill harmful bacteria. The juices from green vegetables seem to be particularly helpful in battling bad breath.

You do not need to suffer from the embarrassment of bad breath. There are things that you can do yourself, from the comfort of your own home that might just alleviate the problem. However, if you have tried everything, including home remedies and proper oral hygiene, and you still have bad breath, you really should go see your doctor. There may be a serious underlying medical condition that needs to be taken care of. Either way, bad breath can be controlled.
