Pain Killer Addiction

The usual chain of events that often occur that leads to pain killer addiction goes something like this: A normal adult unfortunately gets into a car accident and suffers an injury. Or, you are simply coming down from the stairs one Tuesday morning and you trip on one of your childrens toy block. Or, you simple strain you muscle while walking on your way to work, or playing tennis. Any of these instances and a whole lot of other situations can result to injury, and you end up face to face with a doctor who most likely will prescribe you some pain killers to ease your pain.
It is but right to take the prescription given to you. But a problem can begin to beset when it seems that you are taking higher and higher doses of the pain killers, and take them for weeks and months, way long after the injury occurred. This is the time when pain killer addiction sets in, and your body and you are now used to relying on these pain killers to alleviate pain and discomfort.
What normally happens at this time is that the medication that has helped you through your pain might now be causing you further pain, further discomfort, and a pain killer addiction to top that. The pain you got from the incident that caused your injury, is now accompanied by more discomfort and pain due to withdrawal symptoms from pain killer addiction. Instead of easing your pain as it initially did, the medication now causes your body to feel heightened pain levels.
Pain killer addiction problems occur because your body now becomes dependent on the effects than the pain killer gives. Studies have shown that every year, approximately 2 million Americans are prescribed to take pain killers, most of which belong to the family of opioids, and in some communities, pain killer addiction has bypassed the number of cocaine or marijuana addictions. Studies also have indicated that there are about half a million new individuals who end up with pain killer addictions yearly.
There are many drug rehabilitation centers that treat pain killer addiction and the mode of treatment is usually the same as any other addiction. The truth of the matter is that, pain killer addiction, such as on Oxycontin, can be similar to heroin addiction in terms of effects and withdrawal symptoms. Pain killer addictions, thus, should not be overlooked, as they are serious, can lead to fatalities, and can ruin your life and those of the ones you love. Remember that pain killers are there to relieve your pain. If it causes you more, then it does not make it a pain killer now, does it? If you find yourself not wanting to stop taking it, it would be best for you to seek help as soon as possible. The earlier you get on to getting over the pain killer addiction, the easier it will be for you to get your life back.
