Managing a Fever
Posted by admin at 10:59 | Filed In Home Healthcare
A fever is an elevation of body temperature above normal. i.e. above 100 F. When body temperature is not more than 5 F above normal, it does not completely interfere with body functions. Levels above 105 F are dangerous; At 106 F, convulsions are common; at 108 F, irreversible brain damage frequently results. Fevers in a small child needs special care to avoid seizures.
Keep in mind that a fever is not a disease, but a sign that an infection or disease is present. Fevers are common in a variety of diseases, from mild to severe. A mild fever can also be caused by food allergies. The elevated temperature is an effort by the body to burn out infection, and the perspiration helps eliminate toxins. Therefore a partial fever may be helpful to the body in fighting the infection. If the fever does not get too high, let it run its course. Many enzymes, antibodies and white blood cell responses are better during slightly elevated temperatures.
Natural remedies for fever
Ice packs on the forehead, running cool water over the wrists, cool baths, and wet compresses help to reduce temperature.
Drinking herb teas induces sweating and can help break the fever. Teas from feverfew, white willow, ginger, dandelion, meadowsweet, linden and black elder can be helpful. Blue vervain tea is excellent for inducing sweating and lowering temperature. A pinch of cayenne added to a herbal drink will bring blood to the stomach, thus reducing fever.
Solid food should be avoided, but fluids are beneficial and should be taken regularly during a fever. Caloric needs and metabolism are increased, and there is a loss of protein, sodium and potassium during a fever. Juices from beet, carrot and cucumber (together) clean the kidneys and bring fever down. Barley water, or water that rice was cooked in, is helpful. Diluted fruit juices are also beneficial.
Enemas of catnip tea are outstanding for lowering fever, bringing it down quickly and keeping it down. They also relieve constipation and congestion, which tend to keep fevers up.
