How Security Marking Can Help Recover Your Stolen Property

Regardless of the neighborhood you live in or the area you are surrounded by, there is always the risk of someone stealing property from your home. There are many methods that you can use to protect your family and home including security cameras and alarms. However, should a burglar successfully break into your home one of the most efficient methods to ensure that your property is recovered is security marking.
Every year, police recover a large amount of property that has been stolen. The problem is they often have no way of identifying who these items actually belong to, this means that sometimes stolen property never gets reunited with its owner. There are some very simple steps that you can take to make sure your items are returned to you.
Perhaps the simplest security marking is using a security marker like a ultra-violet marker pen. This will place a mark on your property that is invisible and can only be seen with a special UV lamp. Then, when your property is stolen you can claim it as yours by stating there is your security marking on it. Ultra violet marks will begin to fade after about a year and so need to be renewed.
Another method that you can use for some items in your house is engraving or etching. Because it may damage the item, you probably want to make the mark as small as possible. It can, however, turn burglars off from stealing property if they see an engraving in a piece of your property. Metal can be marked with an electric engraver, wooden items, such as antique furniture, can be branded with a fine pointed iron and chemical etching can be used on plastic surfaces. Any item with a glazed surface is best security coded with a ceramic marker pen.
For outside metal items, punching is a fairly popular method because of the permanent mark it leaves. Some outside items you would consider punching include bicycles, lawn mowers, and barbecue grills. This method is done with a hammer and a set of punches to place an indented code on the item. Aluminum items are not suitable for punching.
Ultra small microdots are employed in one of the latest methods of security marking. The dots are suspended in a very strong adhesive and each and every one of them carries a unique customer code. You paint the clear adhesive on several places on your valuable items. The microdots can only be seen with an ultra violet light and are extremely difficult to remove and it is highly unlikely that a burglar would find them all. Only one single microdot needs to be found to identify the stolen item.
Lastly, electronic goods sometimes have a way for you to record your details in the memory. Televisions often have a place for you to input a code that is displayed on the screen. Then every time you turn your television on, you enter your code for security purposes.
After you have security marked your property you need to make an inventory listing all items. Record details of where and how each item is marked and photographing each item could be very helpful. Securely store your inventory at a different address.
There are several commercial services that will security mark and register your property for you if you dont want to tackle the job yourself.
Regardless of the method you use to code mark your items it is the only way you are likely to get stolen property returned to you if recovered by the police. It would be a shame if you never saw your items again because the police dont know who they belong to.
