Home Care in New Jersey - A Growing Trend for Families
Posted by admin at 04:04 | Filed In Home Healthcare
As the baby boom generation (individuals born between 1946 and 1964) continues to age, they stand to dramatically change the population landscape throughout the United States. This trend can be seen clearly in my home state of New Jersey. Between 1990 and 2000 the population of individuals 60 and over grew by 3.5% to just under 1.5 million and by 2030 that number is expected to reach 2.5 million or roughly 25% of the state population. It is also important to note that, within this demographic, the largest area of growth occurred among individuals in the 80 and above age group.
Changes such as these bring about an almost unlimited number of questions and concerns but one can be commonly overlooked is the issue of personal care. The percentage of people between 60 and 80 that live alone is 15% for men and 31% for women. Surprisingly, the percentage of men and women 85 and older who live alone is higher at 27% and 41% respectively. The New Jersey Department of Health also reported that as age increased so did the frequency of some form of disability, physical or otherwise. While a little more than a quarter of men and women between 60 and 64 reported a disability, the percentage of individuals 85 and older who report a disability grows to 64% for women and 73% for men.
Reports such as this begin to show the growing role that home health care will play in the near future. Seniors deserve expert care and should still be allowed the comfort of independent living. As the younger generation is entrusted to care for aging loved ones it can be understandably challenging. The balance between offering the care that an elderly member of your family clearly needs and allowing them their personal freedom is not something that family members need to undertake on their own. Professional home health aides can provide a wide variety of services ranging from live-in care to short-term hourly care. Aides can essentially serve as an extension of the family by providing care for the elderly or disabled and offering peace of mind to other family members who can be assured that their loved ones receive the care they require when they need it.
