How To Layout Your Small Kitchen

Posted by admin at 06:35 | Filed In Kitchen Improvements | Comments Off

There are a few basic guidelines to follow if you want to improve efficiency and convenience in your small kitchen. The right kitchen layout will provide you with enough space as well as a sleek look free of clutter. By properly organizing everything in place, your kitchen will be very comfortable to work in even with the limited area that you have.

The work triangle is the concept wherein all kitchen layouts are based on. The three main points or structures wherein the imaginary lines are drawn to form the triangle are the sink, the range and the refrigerator. Ideally, the three legs of the triangle should be anywhere between 23 to 26 feet total. A small kitchen may measure less. The idea is to create enough space in between these areas to properly make use of all available centers in the kitchen. The right arrangement of the work triangle will fully determine how well you can work within the given premises.

There are four basic kitchen layouts. Although there are hundreds of others available, all these are usually based on these four and still focus on the work triangle. The layouts are the galley or one-wall, the corridor, the L-shaped and the U-shaped. All kitchen floor plans are classified according to their specific shape.

The most common would be the one-wall or galley layout wherein the kitchen is positioned along one wall. All furniture, countertops and appliances are placed on that single area only. The second most common would probably be the corridor layout wherein the kitchen is laid out along two walls facing each other. This is very efficient since you can easily work at the front and back moving along the work triangle easily. Just be sure that you have another route for persons not involved in the work triangle or they may have to keep passing through and disrupt kitchen tasks.

Next is the L-shaped kitchen layout which is laid out along two adjacent walls or sides of a room. This frees up more space for people not involved in the work triangle compared to the corridor which has a narrow aisle. The U-shaped kitchen layout makes use of three sides and has the same advantage of more space in the work triangle. Small kitchens may have to strategically layout everything if you intend to use the L or U shape. Islands, furniture and large appliances are used in order to help direct traffic and make the work triangle as efficient as possible.

Kitchen Remodeling Guide

Posted by admin at 20:40 | Filed In Kitchen Improvements | Comments Off

A kitchen can make or ruin a family life. A badly designed, ill-equipped and cluttered kitchen is likely to affect the peace of mind of an otherwise happy couple. A functionally efficient kitchen makes cooking a pleasurable activity instead of drudgery.

Kitchen remodeling improves the usefulness of the home and adds value and equity to both older and newer homes. Almost every kitchen has a design flaw or something that can be changed to make the space more workable.

With kitchens increasingly becoming the center of social and functional activities, kitchen remodeling has gained importance in the life of many families. Kitchen remodeling becomes challenging if you are on a tight budget or faced with space restrictions.

The findings of a recent research project sponsored by the National Kitchen and Bath Association throw significant light on the role of women and their spouse in the kitchen, which helps planners in charting workable models for modern kitchens. The survey revealed that most women now work outside the home, share the cooking, prepare very few foods from scratch and require storage space for 800 items.

The NKBA has issued a 31-point guideline for industry professionals with minimum standards for kitchen efficiency, convenience, traffic spaces, distances between items, and countertop and cabinet space.

There are three basic kitchen functions to consider and arrange to create an ideal kitchen: storage, preparation and cleanup. Counter space, storage, built-ins, rollout pantry and sinks are the important elements of a kitchen. The functionality of a kitchen depends largely on these elements.

A well-thought-out, detailed plan is a must for any kitchen remodeling project. Formulating a plan is the first step, whether you design the kitchen yourself, work with a cabinet distributor or home center, or go to a kitchen designer. Without a complete and detailed plan developed before the kitchen renovation begins, you may get swept into a spending spiral of unbudgeted extras.

Try taking your kitchen cabinet refinishing job one step further by adding some molding to the fronts of your flat surface cabinets. You will create an interesting touch to your room without spending much more money than you will to do a simple refinish. Putting molding on your cabinets can be done easily.

The Basic Tasks

The first thing is to do the basic refinishing. Remove your cabinet doors and drawer-fronts and take off all the hardware. Scrub them with degreaser until they are thoroughly free of grease and contaminants. This will allow your paint to adhere to the surface. After the wood has dried, you can sand, clean, and paint. Put three or more very thin coats of paint, sanding and allowing drying between each coat. Always wipe away the sanding dust before you paint again.

When you have finished the task to this point, decide what kind of molding you want to have on your cabinet doors and cabinet drawer fronts. You can use thin, flat molding easily. Lattice molding and screen molding work fine, as do other kinds of flat molding. They are about 1/4 inch thick. You also need to consider the width you want. If you want a narrower molding, you can use screen molding, which is usually 3/4 inch wide. Lattice molding, at 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 inch wide is not as narrow.

Hold Up Sample Moldings Against the Cabinet Doors

In order to discover how you want to complete your refinishing project, take a couple of small pieces of each kind you are considering home with you. Hold them up against the doors and try to get an idea of how they would look in different patterns on the cabinet doors. Once you figure that out, you are ready to move on. Take measurements on your cabinet doors and drawer fronts to determine how much molding you would like to put on. Buy the molding.

After you have the molding, it is time to prime it, and then paint it. When you have done those things, you can begin to cut it up. Use a miter saw, a power miter saw if you have one available to you, to make the corners come out square. You have two choices of how to go on with your task at this point. You can cut all the molding pieces at once and then put them together on the cabinet doors and cabinet drawer fronts. The other option is to cut the molding for each cabinet drawer front or door, affix it, and then cut the next.

Use Yellow Wood Glue to Put the Molding Onto Your Cabinet

The best way to put the molding onto your cabinet surfaces is to use yellow wood glue. You will have to put a thin layer of glue all over the bottom of each piece you are attaching. Then, press it on and put some pressure on it for a half hour. You can do this by putting some weight on it or by putting some brads through it. Your cabinet refinishing will go better if you use the brads, because the molding might shift under a simple weight. Wipe away any glue that has oozed out, and let the pieces dry.

When you have put your cabinet doors and cabinet drawer fronts back in place, the next job is to add your own hand-picked hardware. When that is done, your kitchen cabinet refinishing job is complete.

Does your kitchen floor look like its been there for decades? Do the counter tops look like they have been trampled on by elephants and ate on by many little kids? Does your floor plan look like it was built back in time with a different decorating pattern? If this is your kitchen I would look in to updating or remodeling your kitchen. If you update your kitchen with newer appliances and cabinets you could raise the value of your house, and if you remodel your kitchen that can also raise the value of your house but it also youre your ideas and creativity you have in your head come to reality in real life. The starting of the kitchen remodeling you might need some and maybe a lot of patience and time as your kitchen is mess, but at the end of the whole project will be kitchen you can be proud of and one your can share with all your friend and family.

When remodeling your Kitchen you can just do small up grades or you can do a full out remodel with brand new everything in your kitchen. When thinking of doing a small upgrade you can replace appliances, get new handles for cabinets, or refinish the cabinets. Or you can replace your floor cause it looks like its been walked on for a hundred years or replace your counter tops. These changes will have a new effect on your kitchen and also raise the value of your house. But if you decide to do a full scale remodel of your kitchen this can have the most effect on your house and will want you to showoff your new kitchen.

To start your remodeling process of you kitchen you should make notes on what you want to do, what you are going to replace and about how much money you will or are willing to spend to remodel your kitchen. Walk through your kitchen and take notes on what works and what doesnt work and what you want to replace or keep in your current kitchen. Start by picking up magazines on kitchens and looking through them and taking notes on what you want to do and do some research on the internet also and what down notes you find on the internet.

Another thing you might want to do is make some kind of folder with all your notes and designs your wrote and picked out of what you want and like. Do not hold back this far into your early stages of your kitchen remodeling. The next thing you should do is decide on a budget or decide on how much you are willing to spend to remodel your kitchen but if I was you I would decide on a budget so you dont go over and have unexpected bills you have to pay that you cant afford. The next stage of your remodeling process is to match you creative ideas to your budget and what you can afford. By doing this you might be real surprise on how much you can get for you money and how much your creative design will cost you. By this point it would be a good idea to find and contact a designer and maybe even a space planner for your project. They will be very helpful with your design and some advice, tips and some unexpected money issues that might have came to your mind.

There Are No Old Fashioned Aprons

Posted by admin at 03:04 | Filed In Kitchen Improvements | Comments Off

Old fashioned aprons would probably have to mean something that is not new. Aprons that were worn by our ancestors and even in times before that. One thing is for certain, aprons have always been necessary as a means of keeping oneself clean and tidy during particular duties.

Old fashioned aprons were generally a lot bigger than they are today. They would have fancy ruffles and bows and extras on them that would make them appear more like a dress or full garment than just something to keep you clean! If you look for patterns for aprons for styles even from the 1950s, you will find a large, rather flamboyant type of cover all, probably because back then, housework was much more readily done than it is today. Modern conveniences like washing machines, and dishwashers have cut down considerably the amount of housework that needs to be done. For this reason, aprons are not quite as popular as they once were. Back in the 1950s when housework took up a large part of the average housewifes day, of course fashions would have been prevalent, along with other styles of clothing that one wears a lot.

These days, one is interested in buying a functional apron, one that perhaps is waterproof and plain that either male or female would wear. The chef type apron, probably just white or black or striped. Back in the days though, old fashioned aprons would have large ruffled frills over each shoulder for example, have plenty of frills around the pockets, consist of several other types of frill and probably also be in a garish flowery pattern, very colorful and very feminine. The only place a man would wear an apron like that would be in a pantomime!

What we are investigating here then is how women would have completed much of the housework back then which is very interesting isnt it? Before these times, aprons were still very frilly, look at the type that maids would have worn, or even cooks back in the time where a family would employ a staff to look after them. You would never see a butler wearing an apron or a gardener, so if an apron depicts work, who really did all the work? Interesting…

So we have discovered that old fashioned aprons were normally larger and more frilly than they are today, were generally more fashionable in the 1950s and were mostly worn by women. I wonder if Gordon Ramsay would have worn one a hundred years ago… with all those frills around, the mind boggles!

Old fashioned aprons would be a lot harder to make as well. A pattern for an old fashioned apron would be rather extensive as all the separate frills would have to be cut and sewn individually and applied to the apron as it was constructed. What about ironing an old fashioned apron? It could be made from one of those fabrics that creases easily… and who would have to iron them back in the days when there were maids, who ironed the maids apron? If the maid ironed her own apron, she would need a spare and that would mean two to iron!

I am very glad that we live in a world full of modern conveniences so that we dont have all this excess housework these days, thank goodness for fabrics that dont need ironing. No wonder the old fashioned apron is just that, old fashioned! Hail the new fashioned apron!

When it comes to maximizing the visual appeal of a kitchen, nothing achieves this at a more affordable price than kitchen countertops. Because they cover so much space in the kitchen, countertops can visually transform the tone of the room; so choosing the countertop material that will make the most of your renovation dollars can be something of a challenge.

While granite and ceramic tile countertops are among the more popular choices for countertop materials, concrete kitchen countertops are increasingly becoming a countertop material that homeowners seek.

Concrete kitchen countertops have achieved this level of popularity as much for their unrivalled durability as their cost. Many commercial kitchens have made the choice of concrete simply because of how well they hold up under a myriad of conditions typical in the kitchen environment.

For consumer kitchens, concrete holds just as much appeal; as its durability is appealing to serious cooks and its low maintenance is equally appealing for busy families.

When choosing concrete kitchen countertops you have the ability to choose between two distinct options. There are pre-made countertops that are purchased in one piece and then installed into your kitchen. This is an affordable way to install this material into your home and installation can either by handled by a professional contractor or a skilled do-it-yourselfer.

There is also the other option, however, to have a contractor actually build, pour, and form your countertop onsite. Keep in mind, however, that this is the more expensive option and requires a professional with enormous skill and precision to achieve the outcome you desire.

The advantages of concrete kitchen countertops are all about their durability. While there are many countertop materials that can be considered durable - such as granite, ceramic, and engineered stone - concrete particularly has a level of resilience not inherent to other materials. In addition to its resistance to heat and humidity, concrete is also unaffected by all corrosive materials as well as any impact to which it may be subject.

The best thing about concrete kitchen countertops is that they can be stained with any color of your choice. Also, the top layer can be finished as beautifully as you want; with any type of stone and design you desire.

There are problems associated with concrete, however, and anyone who chooses to install such countertops into their home are advised to pay heed to these issues. If you live in a climate that experiences rapid changes in temperature, you need to take extra precautions when it comes to using concrete. This is because the concrete can crack if it should contract, in response to the weather. Most common concrete kitchen countertops come with sealant so that the material is kept protected at all times.

Ultimately, choosing concrete kitchen countertops depends solely on your need for a high-end durability and low maintenance material. Think outside the box when it comes to shopping for kitchen countertops and you will be assured to find the perfect material to suit your needs.

Kitchen Remodel

Posted by admin at 18:40 | Filed In Kitchen Improvements | Comments Off

The kitchen has become a very important room of the house. In fact, today it is the most important room where the members of the family hang around, socialize with their guests, and plan out their meals among other things. A kitchen remodel therefore should take into account this trend and incorporate it into its design. Behind every successful kitchen remodel, there is a lot of thoughtful planning and budgeting involved.

To start, first of all write down all the ideas you would like in your kitchen remodel. Try to undertake the kitchen remodel within the ambit of the kitchen existing footprint.

It is advisable not to remove the plumbing from its original position to avoid unnecessary expenses. For convenience and also to avoid back strain, the cabinets should be selected in different sizes and the counter heights rose during the kitchen remodel. You could repaint the cabinets or install natural or laminate cabinets. A new counter top will do wonders for the look of your kitchen after your kitchen remodel.

Other amenities such as cabinet hard war and under cabinet lighting add interest to your working area. At the same time, its time to see if your old appliances need to be upgraded or not. The same line of thought applies to the flooring.
