Vaccines To Stop Cocaine Addiction Being Tested
Posted by admin at 09:48 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Once you are hooked on drugs, it will take a time to recover. Withdrawal symptoms and a sense of euphoria will always be at hand for those who have been victims of drug addiction and wanting to change.
But with the introduction of a cocaine vaccine, all the pains and burdens of a recovering patient will soon be over. Recently, a couple, who were both doctors, presented their innovative cocaine vaccine, which is believed to be the first in the market that will ease the treatments for drug addicts.
Baylor College of Medicine researchers Dr. Tom Kosten, a psychiatry professor and his wife Therese, a psychologist and neuroscientist in Houston joined forces in creating a remedy for cocaine addiction. Dr. Kosten said with their discovery people who have the eagerness to stop taking cocaine will be helped by the new vaccine.
As the vaccine is injected to the patients, the victims will no longer feel the special \”highness\” and the satisfaction that they used to experience should they be tempted to take again prohibited drugs. Most will surely refrain from taking in cocaine as they will be losing interest in what they used to take.
Based on initial clinical studies, the vaccine attacks the immune system. This results in the inability of the body system to recognize the cocaine taken in, whether cocaine or other variants, responsible in stimulating brain activity and generating a sense of highness among drug addicts.
The vaccine, according to the researchers, inactivates the molecules of cocaine and prevents them from getting into the brain. As this happens the drug-taker will not experience euphoria or a special feeling of highness.
Dr. David Eagleman, a neuroscientist of the same hospital, said this is a great discovery since most scientists for the past decades were analyzing how to block the pathways of the drugs like cocaine going to the brain. But with the new vaccine, it is a solution to that long problem.
The vaccine has already been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for trial, which will be tested in spring. If this will work, this will be helpful in rehabilitating the conditions of the drug patients. But critics are saying this may not work in some patients.

Why Undergo An Alcohol Detox at Home?
Posted by admin at 15:58 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Here are some people who prefer to do alcohol detox at home, while there are others who prefer going to the rehab center to get the traditional treatment. There are some benefits of going to the rehab center, such as the fact that you will not be the only patient there and therefore will not feel left out. Seeing other people like you who are going through the same problems, you would be able to relate to them better and seek support from each other. Also, as there will not be alcohol around, you will be less likely to start drinking again.
But the challenge is that once you get back home, there are more chances of you falling back into your old habits. That is one reason why going for alcohol detox at home is preferred by many. This way you will learn to cope with not drinking alcohol again in your own environment, which is probably more effective than kicking the habit in the temporary environment of a rehab center.
It is true that alcohol detox is hard and you cannot escape from this fact. Like any other form of detox, alcohol detox is also difficult. Following a detox diet can be challenging, and is often compared to drug detox and alcohol detox. Therefore, people prefer to undergo an alcohol detox in the comfort of their home. This helps them to feel more comfortable and to endure the process with less difficulty.
Alcohol Detox Difficulties at Home
Old habits die hard, so if you were a habitual drinker and used to drink at home every night, then it can be very difficult to resist drinking in the comfort of you own home, your own environment. There are different patterns that occur with different habitual drinkers. It is important to take these habits and patterns into consideration and then decide whether it is a good choice to undergo alcohol detox at home.
Nothing comes easy in life, so if you want to get better you will also have to face these challenges. But there is a bright side to undergoing alcohol detox at home, since you will be at home even after the treatment is over there are fewer chances that you will go back to your old habit of drinking once you have completed your detox program.
There is always a chance for drinkers to change, once the environment they live in changes. That is why those who go through alcohol detox at the rehab center, find it extremely difficult to resist temptation once they are released from the rehab center. So if you do decide to face the challenge of an alcohol detox at home, then you are better prepared for the difficult time after your detox program is over and therefore stand a better chance of overcoming your alcoholism.

Gay Drug Rehab Programs in Illinois
Posted by admin at 13:33 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Drug Rehab programs and alcohol rehab programs have been available for the heterosexual community in Illinois for the last 25 years. The drug rehabs in Illinois have been of high quality and both inpatient and outpatient drug addiction treatment. There has been drug rehab programs for almost any kind of drug addiction or alcohol addiction. You can find drug rehab programs for the elderly, adolescent, men or women, but the GLBT population (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) seems to have been forgotten. Where do the GLBT go where they can receive drug rehab treatment without being judged?
Gay Addiction Treatment History Historically, the GLBT community suffering from drug addiction or alcoholism, were expected to fit into primarily heterosexual drug rehab or alcohol rehab programs. Can you imagine being heterosexual and being asked to fit into a gay drug rehab program or gay alcohol rehab program. What do you think your drug rehab experience would be like?
Today, the approach to treating the GLBT population has changed greatly. You can find drug rehab or alcohol rehab programs such as Lakeview Freedom Rings that has designed drug rehab for the GLBT population within the structure of a state of the art addiciton treatment program. Drug rehab programs such as this, have begun to emerge, but on a limited basis.
What is the Clinical Structure Within the Drug Rehab Program The gay drug rehab component is almost a program within a program. While the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender certainly have their own set of specific issues, people are people and addicts are addicts. Any quality gay addiction treatment component will have its own addiction therapist trained in meeting the recovery needs of the GLBT population, the staff at the drug rehab center will receive sensitivity training and education to reduce and sometimes eliminate any homophobic attitudes and the GLBT patients will participate in clinical services with the rest of the population outside of their component.
Illinois Gay Drug Rehab Services
Unfortunately there are not many drug rehab centers in Illinois with \”true\” gay addiction treatment or gay alcohol treatment components within the confines of the drug rehab or alcohol rehab. When looking for a Illinois Gay Drug Rehab or Illinois Gay Alcohol Rehab you might want to call 1-800-511-9225, a gay friendly addiction treatment helpline or go to …………………………….. www.gay-rehab.com.
Jonathan Huttner is one of the founders of Lakeview Health Systems, which operates an addiction treatment program which is gay friendly and has a gay addiction treatment component within the drug rehab program called Freedom Rings.

Completely Free Guide On Alcohol Treatment To Help You
Posted by admin at 02:23 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Though you may not share the same view with me, I know that alcohol is a drug. The way people are affected is what is different. According to available statistics, one out of every 10 people is alcoholic or having a drink problem. Therefore, it is wrong to say that you are hooked just because you are taking lots of booze on a regular basis.
When talking about alcohol and the alcoholic, the biggest problem is the wrong information they are told that the drinker has no problem. When you look at this closely, youll discover that this is a crazy condition. To say that you or a friend is alcoholic and need to check into a rehab center is really not easy. Most of the alcohol treatment programs out there are concentrated on the mind and the not the body. All that the recovering alcoholic has to do is never to take the first drink in order to stay sober. However, it is one thing to get sober but maintaining that state is another issue entirely.
Many people decide to become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous or AA. The Alcoholics Anonymous has been found to be very successful and useful for many people looking for solution to alcoholism. The AA is a fellowship of men and women who needed further assistance in overcoming their drinking problem. Many people have discovered that the support and the 12 step program of action provided by the association has helped people stay sober and live happily.
Depending on an individuals temperament, will power and degree of seriousness of the case, some people may find an alcoholic rehab center very useful. What is hard for people to take is to accept that they are in need of help. It may take a while for your armour to be broken down when you check into an alcoholic rehab center.

Understanding the Causes of Drug Addiction - The Cause and Treatment
Posted by admin at 17:48 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Addiction: What we do in the absence of Real Love Without sufficient Real Love in our lives, the pain and emptiness are intolerable. In order to eliminate or reduce these feelings, were willing to do almost anything. This desire to eliminate pain is the key to understanding the causes of addiction. When we find something that temporarily reduces the emptiness and pain of not having enough of that one element essential to our emotional health (Real Love), we pursue that temporary source of reliefthat substance, person, feeling, or behaviorwith great zeal, even desperation, and when that desperation leads us to regularly disregard the potentially negative social, psychological, and physical consequences of our pursuit, we have satisfied the definition of addiction.
Everything we use as a substitute for Real Loveto temporarily make us feel better in the absence of what we really needbecomes a form of Imitation Love, and all those substitutes fall into one or more of four categories: praise, power, pleasure, and safety.
Praise
In the absence of Real Love, we very much enjoy the acceptance and praise of others, and were generally willing to do a great deal to earn it. But therein lies the problem. We have to earn praise. We have to do what other people want us to do, so the approval they subsequently give us cannot feel as though it were given unconditionally. In short, the instant we do anything to get other people to like us in any way, we cant feel genuinely loved.
In addition to praise being an ineffective substitute for Real Love, its effects are also annoyingly temporary. Weve all had the experience of working hard to purchase a moment of acceptance, only to discover that the effects wear off with astonishing speed. Then we have to earn it again, and again, and again. In fact, the more we rely on praise, the faster the effects wear off.
We also have to work harder and harder for the same amount of praise. When you were four years old, for example, you could simply tie your shoes correctly and be rewarded with Wow, you are so clever. But you have to do a lot more than that to hear those same words now, dont you? This continual earning of praise is exhausting.
We have also learned that greater quantities of praise are required to give us the same feelings of satisfaction. Where once the slightest nod of approval may have been fulfilling, eventually we require greater displays of acceptance, then applause, then printed notices in the newspaper. Ask most professional performers about their growing and often insatiable need for praise. Eventually, no amount of praise yields satisfaction.
It shouldnt be difficult to see that the pattern weve described here for praise is exactly the same as for any addictive drug. Lets make that comparison here. Any narcotics addict, for example, knows that when using his drug
- the initial effects are exciting.
- there is a sense of relief or excitement, but the feeling is never one of genuine fulfillment or peace or joy.
- the effects wear off, and with time they wear off more quickly.
greater and greater quantities are required to achieve the same effect.
The addictions to praise and drugs share another important characteristic. While people are addicted to either substance, the intoxication and other effects are so distracting that the users cannot feel the effects of Real Love. They cant feel loved, and that effect alone is deadly.
With the possible exception of the physical withdrawal seen in drug addiction, there is little to no difference between the addiction to drugs and the addiction to praise. It should also be emphasizedoriginally stated in the new definition of addictionthat the addictions to all other forms of Imitation Love follow the same patterns as those for drugs and praise, as described above. All addictionsto praise, power, pleasure, and safetyare essentially the same. They have the same characteristics, and in the end, theyre all capable of destroying our lives, because they destroy our ability to benefit from the Real Love that is essential to our emotional well-being.
In order for people to smile at us, compliment us, and want to spend time with usall signs that they accept or love usweve learned that we usually have to be talented, beautiful, wealthy, witty, cooperative, grateful, successful, or otherwise worthy of acceptance. That kind of acceptance is conditional, because all the signs of itthe smiles and kind words, for exampledisappear when we make mistakes, inconvenience people, and fail to live up to the expectations of others.
Because the absence of Real Love is painful, however, were willing to do a lot to earn the approval that temporarily makes us feel good, even if its conditional. We make ourselves look good physically, for example, with exercise, clothing, makeup, starvation, and plastic surgery, all in the hope that someone will say, Youre looking good. We work hard to succeed at school and in our jobs in order to be complimented for our intelligence, creativity, and diligence.
Power
Although its mostly unintentional, any time we successfully manipulate or control someone, were enjoying a sensation of power over that person. We use money, authority, sex, flattery, and personal persuasion to influence, control, and even hurt people. When we control someone, we actually feel more connected to him or her in a brief, shallow way. Its not Real Love, but when we control the people around us, we feel less powerless; we feel less of the emptiness and helplessness that are always associated with a lack of Real Love.
Pleasure
When we dont feel unconditionally loved, we often use pleasurefood, sex, drugs, shopping, gambling, driving fast, and many forms of entertainment and excitementto feel better temporarily. Certainly theres nothing inherently wrong with pleasure, but when we compulsively seek it, were using it to fill a deep emptiness, and that pursuit easily becomes an addiction.
Safety
Without sufficient Real Love, were already experiencing an insufferable pain, and well go to great lengths to keep ourselves safe from anything that might prolong or worsen our pain. To minimize painful disapproval, we stay away from unfamiliar situations, tasks, and relationships, and then we confuse that feeling of relative safety with real happiness. People who are chronically shy, for example, are addicted to safety. Alcohol and drugs are common avenues to diminish pain, yet another way to achieve safety.
The Broad Face of Addiction
We can become addicted to anything that diminishes the pain of not feeling loved, and that includes a broad range of substances, people, feelings, and behaviors. We can become addicted to
- alcohol, which gives us an obvious sensation of pleasure. More importantly, alcohol is a depressant that dulls the pain in our lives, most prominently the pain of not feeling loved. Dr. Baer relates that virtually every alcoholic he has known has resonated with the suggestion that relief of pain (safety) is the primary reason for his or her drinking. Many people also get a sensation of power from alcohol, because when intoxicated they feel a measure of freedom from their fears.
- drugs (same pleasure, power, and safety as from alcohol).
- sex (pleasure, praise, power).
- food (pleasure).
- gambling (pleasure, praise, power).
- approval (praise, power, safety).
- the love compulsively derived from a single person (praise, power, pleasure, safety). Falling in love usually exemplifies this.
- controlling others (power, praise, safety).
- anger (power, safety).
- lying (safety).
- shopping (praise, power).
- running from relationships (safety).
- money (praise, power, pleasure, safety).
And this is an incomplete list. When we understand addiction in light of the insights above, the incidence of addiction in our society rises to well over 90%.
How can I treat drug addiction and other types of addiction?
When we understand that addiction is a pathologic pursuit of anything that will reduce the pain in our lives, usually the pain of not feeling loved, the treatment of drug addiction becomes apparent.
As people learn to find Real Lovethe single ingredient most important for happinesstheir wounds begin to heal. They begin to find wholeness and genuine health. As the pain in their lives diminishesand it uniformly does in the presence of Real Lovethey simply lose the need to fill their emptiness with Imitation Love, which includes all the objects of addiction. People most effectively let go of their addictions not by willpower but because they have no need for them anymore.
This is far more than a theory. Thousands of people have now experienced the healing power of Real Love in their lives and have then experienced the freedom of being released from the chains of their addictions.
The world is literally dying from a lack of the one thing essential for our happinessReal Love. We spend our entire lives trying to replace that unconditional love with praise, power, sex, money, entertainment, safety, and so on. But it never works, and the resulting emptiness and fear are almost too much to bear.
We dont have to live like this anymore. Greg Baer and RealLove.com are teaching (1) the real cause of fear and anger and (2) how to find this Real Love that replaces the fear, anger, and conflict in our lives with peace, confidence, and genuine happiness.
Dr. Greg Baer is the author of 16 books, DVDs, and CDstwo of which are internationally published by Penguin Putnam Groupand has presented the life-changing message of Real Love to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world.
For more information on Real Love, including hours of free streaming video and audio, visit http://www.RealLove.com Youll be grateful for the rest of your life that you took this step.

How Long Should We Wait Till We Do Something?
Posted by admin at 16:53 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Anyone can check for themselves, but each shooting in the country has been done by someone who had been on or is currently on psychiatric drugs. Some claim it is because they went off their medication that caused them to do what they did. Think about that for a minute. How can a medication be good if it has this kind of side effect?
How can anyone think that adding chemicals to their bodies that are not natural can be a good thing? How can anyone think that psychiatric drugs that are more addicting than heroin can be good? Why do people continue to allow this profession to administer these kinds of drugs to our children? I must admit it is a very lucrative game plan. It is a multi billion dollar enterprise per year. But at what cost?
How many kids must be killed before we take a real good look at the cause. If these drugs are as bad as I state, would you want to have your kid be on them? The Baltimore county school system in Maryland as over 50% of the kids on Ritalin. Ritalin is very addictive. The kids now must be on the drug, in order to go to school. It makes them into very nicely controlled zombies.
One thing you may want to do is check to see what the definition for ADHD is and compare it to the definition of a normal child. Last time I did that the two definitions were the same or extremely close.
What does that say? That the psychiatric community has a plan to put all children on a drug in order to get them to be more manageable. This to me is insane.
And the end result is a child who is not really helped, not getting his problems addressed properly and becoming frustrated with life. Signs that there is something wrong often go unhandled. Then when the worse occurs, people blame the kid for not taking his medication.
As a people, we need to wake up and demand that the psychiatric community be held responsible for their actions. They are killing our children.

Substance Abuse Treatment Service Today
Posted by admin at 13:53 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Millions of Americans today receive health care for mental or substance-use problems and illnesses. These conditions are the leading cause of combined disability and death of women and the second highest of men. Effective addiction treatments exist and continually improve. However, as with general health care, deficiencies in drug rehab delivery prevent many from receiving appropriate drug rehab treatments. That situation has serious consequences–for people who have the conditions; for their loved ones; for the workplace; for the education, welfare, and justice systems; and for our nation as a whole.
A previous Institute of Medicine report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century (2001), put forth a strategy for improving health care overall. However, health care for mental and substance-use conditions has a number of distinctive characteristics, such as the greater use of coercion into drug rehab, separate care delivery systems, a less developed quality measurement infrastructure, and a differently structured marketplace. These and other differences raised questions about whether the Quality Chasm approach is applicable to health care for mental and substance-use conditions and, if so, how it should be applied. This report, Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions: Quality Chasm Series, examines those differences, finds that the Quality Chasm framework is applicable to health care for mental and substance-use conditions, and describes a multifaceted and comprehensive strategy to do so. The strategy addresses issues pertaining to health care for both mental and substance-use conditions and the essential role that health care for both plays in improving overall health and health care. In doing so it details the actions required to achieve those ends-actions required of clinicians; health care organizations; health plans; purchasers; state, local, and federal governments; and all parties involved in health care for mental and substance-use conditions.

Facts About Alcoholism That Patients, As Well As Relatives, Ought To Know
Posted by admin at 08:18 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Knowing the fundamental facts about alcoholism is crucial in order for a person to have a clearer understanding of the disease of alcoholism in the first instance. By comprehending the basic, elementary drug or alcoholism facts, you will be more able to access assistance and deal with alcoholism should you ever be in a position in your own life when that becomes necessary - either for yourself or for someone you know and care about.
So, how do we define alcoholism? Basically, alcoholism is defined as a disease that is characterized by the presence of four primary symptoms in most cases:
* when alcohol is consumed the patient loses control
* the patient has a strong craving alcohol
* the patient develop an increased tolerance of alcohol over time
* the patient is physical dependent of alcohol
Is alcoholism really a disease? Most of the researchers and experts do consider alcoholism to be a disease. These researchers and medical practitioners seem to agree that the underlying symptom of this disease is a craving or need for alcohol consumption. The craving for alcohol itself can be as powerful and as intense as the need for food and water. The nature of this disease is such that a person will keep drinking alcohol even though he or she experiences extreme problems physically, mentally, emotionally, legally and socially.
Can alcoholism really be cured? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Alcoholism is a chronic illness that can be controlled but not cured. One of the most prominent of the alcoholism facts to keep is that the disease of alcoholism can be managed through treatment and through a responsible and reasonable relapse prevention plan.
If you wonder whether alcoholism can be treated, the answer is much more positive. As I mentioned above, there are alcoholism treatment options available to people who are suffering from the disease of alcoholism.
There have been many discussions whether alcoholism treatment works or not. Although facts about alcoholism tell us that a large part of treated and restored patients, start to consume alcohol after a while and often repeat this pattern several times, many alcohol addicts are restored and are living normal lives for long periods. So the answer is yes. Research and facts about alcoholism show that the key to a successful treatment and a sustainable recovery, is that the the patient is willing to live a healthy and sober life by making the effort necessary to make it possible.

Heroin - The Real Life Effects
Posted by admin at 02:18 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
Despite being known as one of the most highly addictive drugs on the market, heroin is still a grim reality plaguing the United States. More than 600,000 people are said to require treatment to suppress their addiction for the drug. Over the years, numerous shifts in the use of heroin has seen more users turning from injecting heroin to snorting or smoking because they believe they will receive a higher concentration of the drug, as well as avoid addiction. Heroin causes a wide range of effects that can be seen throughout both immediate short-term reactions and long-term use. Below, you will learn of the negativity surrounding the use of this powerful and extremely dangerous drug:
Short-Term Effects of Heroin
Once a user injects or inhales heroin, the drug infiltrates the barrier that holds the blood to the brain. It is here that the drug is converted to morphine, which instantly combines with other substances within the body. Those who have a history of abusing heroin will feel a rush of pleasure, which is influenced by how much of the drug is taken and how quickly it enters the brain. The reason why heroin is so addictive is because it reaches the brain in such a short amount of time.
The sensations that come with the usage of heroin are matched with a warm feeling about the skin, dry mouth, intense itching, as well as nausea or vomiting. The limbs may also feel heavy. Once the initial effects have lessened, the abuser may suffer from many hours of drowsiness. The functions of the heart will also slow, as well as their breathing. Since the purity of drugs cannot be accurately assessed on the street, overdosing of heroin is quite common.
Long-Term Effects of Heroin
While the addition that comes with heroin abuse is one of the most damaging long-term effects connected to heroin, there are many other long-term effects to consider. A vicious cycle of using and searching for more drugs becomes one of the main purposes of living for users. The drug is so potent that the brain and behavior patterns of a user become altered.
The higher amount of heroin taken equates to a more intense physical dependency. The body easily adapts to the presence of the drug in the system and will show withdrawal symptoms if the drug is reduced in a short amount of time. A user may then suffer from restlessness, insomnia, vomiting, diarrhea, restless leg movements, and muscle and bone pain. After the last dose of heroin, the worst effects of withdrawal are felt between 24 and 48 hours. These side effects may continue for many months afterwards.
Health Risks
Continued heroin use can lead to an assortment of major health conditions, including fatal overdosing. Spontaneous abortions may occur in pregnant women. Veins may collapse and the chances of acquiring an infectious disease (like HIV or hepatitis) may arise. Infections may develop within the lining of the heart and valves. Abscesses, liver disease and cellulitis are all threats to the health of a heroin user.

Dual Diagnosis Drug Rehab
Posted by admin at 05:53 | Filed In Drug Abuse Help | Comments Off
People have heard of people that have a mental illness and people have heard of people who are addicted to drugs. The question that is posed here is whether people have heard of addicts that also have mental illnesses. This is actually a very common occurrence and there are dual diagnosis drug rehab centers to accommodate these groups of addicts. This form of drug rehab that focuses on the addiction and the mental illness combined as one form of therapy with the end goal that can help the addict to live a clean and drug-free life.
Some rehab centers will treat the mental cause itself that may have led to the drug addiction; this could be a traumatic childhood, or addicted parents, but this does not mean that the center has made a clinical diagnosis that the individual addict has a mental disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder. There is a difference in something that has led to a drug addiction and in something that is caused by the drug addiction. Mental illnesses may not even be apparent until the drug rehab is happening or the mental illness can cause the drug addiction but the affects of the drugs can be worse because of the illness.
It is a very complicated program, diagnosing and treating a dual diagnosis, but, recovery from drug addiction and control of the mental illness is possible through a dual diagnosis rehab program. This type of drug rehab helps an addict with a mental illness. A dual diagnosis will do the following for an addict with a mental illness:
Will help the patient to see how drugs and/or alcohol act in their life. This should be achieved under a confidential discussion with out the fear of getting into trouble.
\r Will help the patient to see how drugs and mental illnesses affect each other.
\r May provide the patient with opportunities to work, a job that will help the rehab process.
\r Will help the patient to make and achieve personal goals.
\r Will provide information pertaining to the patients mental illness or illnesses and how to cope with them. Also will help the patient to live as normal a life as possible with their dual diagnosis.
\r Give the patient the tools to recover from addiction and live with a mental disorder.
\r Teach the patient social, communication, and personal skills
\r If medication is needed for the mental disorder, teach him about the medicine and what affects that it will have on them.
\r May involve the family so that they can also learn about the duel diagnosis.
The list above is just a few of the things a person with a dual diagnosis will learn about and go through during their drug rehab. It is important for the patient to understand about drug addiction and mental disorders if there is ever any hope of rehabilitation. The most important thing to remember is that the people who have addictions and mental illnesses.
