Are these familiar dialogues for you: I dont have the nerve to try that! or thats too risky! or Im not sure I can do that etc? Are you one of those people who always doubt your own ability? Well, youre not alone. A lot of people do not have confidence in themselves.

Every change in the normal way of life gets tons of introspection and most of the time, self-doubt wins and not trying seems safer. However, safe does not always mean best; sooner or later youll get depressed being always stuck on a rut. You have to reduce these self-doubts then to move ahead.

It will help if you can figure out why you feel wimpy all the time. Is it because of a past mistake that crippled you so much? Are you afraid to end up like someone you knew who took too much risk? Were you told often by authority figures parents, sibling, teachers or officers that you dont and cant amount to anything? Youve probably heard it so often that you believed it as the universal truth all the time.

Deep down you know its not true, right? Not all risks will result into failure and you can avoid making the same mistake your friend did. Silence the inner critic in you then. You dont have to listen to past criticisms. Nor should you judge all your other abilities based on a single failure. Instead draw on your strengths and keep them in mind. Granted, its not going to be easy. But you can take baby steps and not leap into anything that youre not ready for.

Start by cataloguing your positives. Take out a sheet of paper and list down the things that you know you can do. Fill it up from the whimsical able to juggle four balls in the air, for example to the downright great ones like a good grasp of grammar. Look back and try to remember how you knew those skills. Some of them probably were inherited or something that you learned instinctively. But the rest were skills that you got only thru experience.

Therefore, you must have tried it before and found out that you can do it. That list becomes a physical proof that you are someone who can do something and by the same token, can do a lot more if you can just get out of your safety zone and try something new again.

Banish those doubts and see how high you can fly.

Self Esteem is how we feel about ourselves, how much we like and respect ourselves.

It has been said that if we dont like ourselves it is impossible to really like, much less to love, anyone else. Liking and respecting ourselves is very different from vanity or narcissism, which at their most extreme, can become total self-absorption, selfishness and the inability to consider anyone elses viewpoint or feelings. To have healthy self esteem, on the other hand, is to be comfortable and confident within ourselves, with who we are as people.

Most people have their self doubts, and may be uncomfortable with some of their personality traits. The good news is that we can change almost any part of our personality if it is important to us and we are prepared to put in the necessary effort. This is actually what self improvement is all about, making positive change to our lives. Making changes requires commitment and can be difficult, but there are many valuable resources available that can provide great advice and guidance.

Self esteem is about how we feel on the inside, and how we feel inside will affect how we feel and act on the outside. Our self esteem determines our personality and character, and how we react to the experiences and challenges we face in our lives. It also affects our relationships and how we interact with everyone we come in contact with. And it certainly affects how successful and happy we are throughout our lives.

Having healthy self esteem is really about feeling comfortable and confident with ourselves as we are, and appreciating ourselves as human beings. Nobody is perfect, and self improvement is an ongoing journey. The very fact that we are making the effort to improve our lives will help us to feel better about ourselves and boost our self esteem and confidence.

Self-esteem plays a role in everything we do. It helps us feel good about ourselves, and gives us the courage to try new things. A healthy dose of self esteem can give you the strength to do what you know is right, even when everyone else is saying something different. It can also help you handles the ups and downs of life with a positive outlook.

Sometime our self-esteem begins to waver when we surround ourselves with people who always look for the downside of life. Negativism can be very contagious, so take special care not to follow their lead in the way you look at yourself or life.

Our health can also play a direct role in how good we feel about ourselves. When we are overweight we may have the tendency to only concentrate on the bad things about ourselves, and forget all the great stuff! Sometimes, hormones can send us into a tizzy, leaving us frustrated and overwhelmed at even the simplest task.

Its important to recognize what you can change about yourself and what you cant. If youre upset about something that can be changed than do it! Otherwise, learn to live with that thing you may not like, and look for ways to see the wonderfulness it offers you.

Your diet and exercise can have a lot to do with the way you look and feel about yourself on a regular basis. Teens often find their self-esteem dwindling when they discover that their face has turned into a field of pimples. Yet, just cutting back on sweets and soda can help alleviate much of the problem.

Adults too can find themselves feeling sluggish and down when they dont eat a well-balanced diet. No one feels good about themselves when they feel physically exhausted and ill all of the time. A great way to start building your self-esteem is by building up your body. Eat well. Get enough rest and exercise. Youll look better, feel better and have a better outlook on life. When your body is fit, it works better and gives you the energy and resources to handle anything that comes along!

The nice thing about self-esteem is that its never too late to start building a better attitude, a better body and a better life. The first step is taking care of your physical body so that it can take care of your mental and emotional one.

Have you ever noticed that the people who have successful careers also have a healthy (or even overblown) sense of themselves and their abilities? The ability to see the great things you bring to your job and being strong enough to stand up for what you believe are essential to on-the-job success.

Those who exhibit extremely meek and mild personalities naturally fall into the background. While they may in reality be more qualified and capable of doing the job, they arent the ones who command the respect and authority necessary for those big promotions. Strong personalities exude strength and power and tend to be the ones chosen to lead in the workforce.

So, if you are struggling to move to the next level at work, you may want to take a good hard look at your level of self esteem and whether or not it may be harming your chances of advancement by not allowing your co-workers and superiors to see the wonderful asset you are to the company.

Watch for these career busters:

Lack of Confidence.
\r A lack of confidence in yourself can carry over in the way others view your ability to take over a project and make sure it is completed on time, on budget and with the creativity and attention it deserves. Until you can show a sincere belief in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you?

Lack of Control.
\r People who dont have confidence in themselves often lack the control to get others to do what they need to. Those in superior positions at work have to have the power to be able to get people moving in order to get the job done.

An Inability to Take Responsibility.
\r Those with little self esteem often find it difficult to accept even minimal criticism or suggestions and may exhibit an inability to accept responsibility for things that have gone wrong (often placing blame on others around them), and the willingness or aptitude to tackle problems that may arise.

An Inability To Try New Things.
\r Being a supervisor of people and projects requires a certain sense of adventure. Those who are stuck doing everything the same old way years after year out of fear of rejection often find sales sluggish and clients unhappy.

Job-Hopping.
\r One way to ensure that you wont move up in a company is to leave before you even have a chance at a promotion. People with low self-esteem are restless and often view their current job as a stepping stone to the next one, but never really stay long enough to make a real impression.

A Lack of Intimacy.
\r While office romances should be discouraged, you do need to be able to connect with the people you work with on a personal note to be able to move forward. Good supervisors get to know the people below them and take the time to understand what personal issues may be affecting their job performance. People with low self-esteem are uncomfortable forming close relationships either on a personal or professional level that can hurt their chances of promotion in the future.

A Lack of Energy.
\r People on the fast track for success are often bullets of energy who can handle multiple jobs and responsibilities with little effort. Low esteem often saps your energy levels and makes it difficult to handle any problems that may arise on the job.

Maintaining a high level of self esteem can help a child or teen find the courage to stand up against the crowd for what they believe and say no with courage and power. Self-esteem is what helps us all hold our heads up high and believe that we can accomplish anything we set out to do. All wonderful traits we want to instill in our kids.

Unfortunately for far too many teens, sudden changes in their bodies and emotions can leave them scared, confused and frightened. Many lose their ability to feel good about themselves and begin to make bad choices that can adversely affect their futures.

How can you, as a parent, tell the difference between normal teenage angst and serious self-esteem issues? Watch for these important clues:

-A sudden change in the way they look and take care of their appearance.
\r A child who has always been meticulous about the way they dressed and looked, and who suddenly takes no care in themselves or their clothing may be adopting an attitude of Im always a mess anyway so no one will notice.

-Exhibits an extreme need to be perfect.
\r Children who feel that they must be perfect at everything often do so as a way to hide all the things they perceive that they cant do correctly. Being studious is one thing, but if your child suddenly exhibits an unnatural need for perfection, or has a hard time dealing with even the smallest amount of criticism; it may be a sign of trouble.

-An inability to try new things.
\r Its natural for children and teens to want to try new things and have new experiences. A child who consistently shies away from anything but the norm, may not have the confidence to believe that they can succeed.

-Constant belittling.
\r A child with a good sense of self esteem is can easily interact with their peers and accept lifes challenges without making it a big deal, while children with low self esteem will constantly belittle themselves even when they do succeed.

What if you recognize these signs in your own child? What can you do to help build your childs self esteem? Follow these tips:

-Watch what you say.
\r Be gentle with any criticism and watch for opportunities to offer thoughtful (and truthful) praise.

-Be a positive role model.
\r Dont be too hard on yourself either. If you expect too much from yourself, your children are apt to follow your lead and mirror your behavior.

-Be affectionate with your child.
\r Give your kids lots of hugs and praise. Let them know that they are worthy of your love and attention.

-Make your child feel safe and nurtured.
\r Take the time to make him or her feel important.

Many people believe to build self-esteem in children, the parents and teachers must be careful in the way they approach children and how they talk to them. This may or may not be true, but I believe if it is done wrong it could cause a worse effect. Self-esteem should come from success and not coddling by teachers and parents. Rather, the parents and teachers should assist the child in finding out what they are good at and helping them excel with their natural talents and or new learned skill.

In building self-esteem in this way it is reinforcing reality, rather than simply telling every child that they are great and important simply for being themselves. Because in the real world that is not necessarily the case; for instance the soccer player on the team should not have false self-esteem making them believe they are just as good as the star players unless they really are.

A false coddling by teachers and parents can cause a disenchanted youth who cannot compete to later on be devastated. There are too many suicides in college for this reason. Self-esteem should come from the actual success of the child in various endeavors and they may also need to understand if they do not work for that success then a false reality or false sense of self-confidence is unacceptable.

I find that too many in business, sports, politics and other human endeavors who think they are so great, for simply showing up, but in the end they cannot perform and I blame much of this on a false sense of reality that they have learned incorrectly along the way from their parents, mentors and teachers. We should not cloud the issues of self-esteem or how best to develop it, nor should we allow our children to hide behind false realities. Please consider all this in 2006.

Confidence is the most important factor in a successful persons life, a person that has confidence has the power of getting any thing that he/she wishes to have in his/her life. Having self-confidence shows a persons way of approaching his/her goals more easily. Confidence is something that is required by everyone no matter what his/her cast race or profession be. The most important step to success arguably. A person that is self-confident has belief in him/her. No dream looks too big for a person that is full of self-confidence. However there are many people who are unable to achieve their goals just because they lack the all important aspect self-confidence.

The people who are low on confidence often face failure, the cause that they dint have the faith in their ability. This kind of mind set can be developed due to a past failure, wherein a person might fear that he/she will be unable to achieve the goal just as the last time around. The very fact that you had faced a defeat turns you to think negatively, and before giving a shot you start assuming disasters. All this will make you nothing but a person that was unable to achieve zilch in his/her life.

Building confidence is not an easy task, where after repeating the word a thousand times you will be full of confidence. \”Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?\”

Unlike the wicked queen in Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, most anyone wanting to lose weight avoids looking in mirrors if at all possible. Of course there are the normal routine glimpses such as the half-asleep gaze while brushing teeth or during the morning rush to get off for work.

All of us who have been described anywhere from pleasingly plump to obese avoid looking at ourselves like a plague. It is self protection when we really do not like the image reflected back to us from that \r mirror.

Unfortunately, not enough attention is paid to those inner feelings. Instead we are told to concentrate on losing fat, learning to make healthy food choices and exercising.

False Myth: Reaching your \”magic number\” on the bathroom scale is going to solve all problems: Life will be happy ever after just like the Snow White story. It takes more than weight loss to replace those \r hidden feelings of self hatred or dislike. First we recognize the feelings and then we can go on to create a positive image.

Your clothing has gone from loose to the point where certain movements might result in some unexpected exposure that could prove embarrassing. You can postpone it no longer-some new smaller sizes must be purchased.

You have been looking forward to finally being able to wear more stylish clothing. Instead, in spite of your leaner body, the shopping trip becomes a painful experience. You select some outfits that look \r promising. The store staff interrupts their gossip session long enough to point you in the right direction for the dressing rooms.

The next 20 to 30 minutes are full of misery because nothing looked good. That smirk on the face of the saleslady when you told her nothing fit or looked right was the final straw. Her parting comment about the style being better on thinner individuals did not help matters. Defeated, you order a smaller size of the same-old, same-old comfortable \”things\” that you had learned to hate!

The learning experience of choosing what looks best gets bypassed when you have been purchasing large size clothing for any length of time. Limitations on the selections seem to increase rapidly as the \r size goes up. Shopping becomes more a matter of grabbing something to cover rather than to flatter the body.

No matter what dress size you are or how much you weigh, perfect proportions are hard to come by. It is easy to have a change in hair color. Contact lenses will provide a new eye color. But there are \r certain \”givens\” that are not going to change ever and others you can change with plastic surgery if you have enough money.

You cannot grow taller but your clothes will certainly look better with the improved posture gained from your exercise program. Many of the other problems such as bone size, tall or short, top heavy or bottom heavy and long or short waisted can be minimized by using camouflage in clothing.

Before your next shopping trip, spend some time really studying why one friend looks great in the current fashion and another does not. I have found that health and/or fitness magazines have more practical, usable ideas than the standard high fashion ones. Also you can increase your fashion smarts doing some people watching at the local mall. Spend some thought figuring out why one person has succeeded while another has failed to look their own personal best.

At intervals the Oprah Winfrey show has programs on looking your best. Their experts will take ordinary women (no fashion models) and show how they can improve their image by clothing selection alone. It is magic now and not six months later. The best part is the explanation of why the choices were made. The undergarment features are equally helpful. (You can always tape programs for later \r viewing.)

Just once I would like to see the same skills in clothing selection, makeup and hair styling used for the \”before\” and \”after\” photographs in the diet product advertisements. Instead the before photograph shows the person in the worst image possible. The after view has also had the benefit of a very skilled photographer.

One of my favorite books is \”Does This Make Me Look Fat?\” by Leah Feldon. Her book gives definitive rules for dressing thin for every height, size, and shape. It is a great tonic for the ego to learn that even the rich and famous have doubts about appearance and have tricks to disguise their problems.

Take time to explore your local book store. There are other good books offering advice on styles to flatter the various figure types and avoid the trial-and-error disasters. Many of the department stores have personal shoppers who can guide you to the right choices for your body type and lifestyle.

Be open to experiment to find your best styles. Always remember that you are unique–no one else is exactly like you. Shopping becomes much more fun when you know in advance the kind of clothing that shows you off in the best possible way. Your weight loss program is a success when you enjoy looking at that mirror image. You have learned how to look and feel beautiful!

Self Esteem: The Trouble With Me Is

The word esteem comes from the Latin aestimo which, literally translated, means estimate, guess or reckon. Therefore, when we talk about self-esteem / aestimo, we are really talking about an estimation of ourselves and not fact.

Yet this personal estimate controls everything about us and is called upon to interpret everything we come into contact with. We create prejudices based on our self-estimate and therefore create assumptions.

Individuals with low self-esteem will often begin the day feeling negative, worthless and possibly ugly. This builds during the day, as actions and comments from others appear to validate these feelings, perpetuating the cycle of negativity, frustration and anger. Where as those with higher self-esteem will often begin the new day with a clean slate, relatively speaking.

Low self-esteem is an enigma for those who endure it. On the one hand it is something undesirable that needs to be fixed but on the other hand the threat of fixing it would leave a void or if I fix it what becomes of me?

This then becomes The trouble with me is a catch 22 phrase that means nothing can be done.

Self-esteem is built during our infancy through to adolescence and continually validated into adulthood. There are many key phases in the development, but for the purposes of this article we cover the critical first three.

Phase 1 Infancy

In infancy our interpretation of the world is almost totally controlled by our environment and parents. It is common for the first born to develop self-esteem issues. For no other reason than their parents were faced with a new being without the aid of instruction manual. This causes stress in the parents and consequently stress in the infant.

Phase 2 Cognition

Cognition, as we get a little older we begin acquiring and processing knowledge. Importantly this is based on our own reasoning and perception influenced by the responses we achieve from those around us. We instinctively react to these responses emotionally which become key anchors in our onward development. Good girl / boy is obviously good as it teaches us the preferred behaviour in order to gain reward, bad girl / boy is necessary, when appropriate, teaches us how not to behave.

The child that does not regularly get either is left feeling a little confused and will try harder to provoke reaction of any kind. However, there is a catch, over-use will have the same impact, if you are continually being told that you are this or that, for no real reason, the child will be equally as confused. This confused state is a key foundation for developing low self-esteem.

Phase 3 Independence

As the child develops further he/she will seek to be heard even before speech is an option. At this time the first steps toward Self begins. It is often referred to as the terrible twos!

The same rules apply as in the cognition phase. Not being heard is the same as not being recognised as an individual and therefore not significant. Recognition and value are important at this time. The child begins to recognise and understand that the world is much bigger place, which is quite scary to them, so need constant validation and support.

By the time we reach adolescence our Self estimation is built and will be tested to the full. Everything is challenged and once again the reaction gained is critical. Without recognition the young adult will have no reference point, and therefore will find it hard to know what is appropriate and what is not.

Is there any hope for people with low Self-esteem? Many individuals who recognise they have an esteem issue will say that they suffer from it. It often leads to depressions and many other disorders. However, those who not have recognised that they have low Self-esteem will pursue relief of the symptoms and may never get to know where the root lies.

For those that recognise they have low Self-esteem, the journey to improve it requires thought and small steps. There is no magical pill or miracle cure but we can focus on changing behaviour.

With low Self-esteem, the trouble with me is:

I never truly comfortable being happy

I am never good enough

Using the model, these statements all come from Identity

Reframing the statements has a profound effect on their impact. Quickly read through the list again and notice what reaction you have to them. Now lets reframe them:

I feel ugly at the moment because

I get obsessed with gaining everybodys acceptance/approval even if it means comprising me when I feel

I often feel empowered by setting tests/traps for my partner to fall in to whenIs this love because

I feel empty, unfulfilled and unhappy despite what is going on in my life because

Reframing the statements into a question means there should follow an answer.

And in the answer lies the path to better Self-esteem.

\r Are you always self conscious because you are afraid the people will notice so?

If yes, know that your emotions are private and until you fix your problems, no one has got the right to know them, your emotions are yours, no one should be allowed to know what you feel except the people whom you choose.

Five signs that shows lack of self confidence

The following are some signs that show that you may be lacking self confidence, any person with above average experience will spot those signs and determine that you are lacking self confidence, make sure that you are aware of them.

* Giving reasons for your actions : suppose someone was having launch with a group of people whom he doesnt know very well, and suddenly he dropped his glass of coke on the floor. What will he do? , well some people will just start to give immediate reasons for everyone to explain why did that happen, by using comments like oh, the glass was just beside the edge or oh, I am so tired today thats why I wasnt concentrating well. Know that confident people dont give reasons for their actions, if you dropped the glass or made a mistake, it doesnt change whom you are, know that its your right to mistake because you are a human and not a robot .

* Replying back immediately to criticism: I am sure that you have experienced a situation where upon giving a small critic comment to one of your friends he replied back immediately and aggressively. For example if you told him your performance wasnt that good today then he replied saying no no no, its just because I was tired or no I was just thinking of something else while working and thats what caused it, that shows that he lacks self confidence, Confident people listen to criticism and see whether its constructive or not, if it was constructive they accept it else they dont bother much. Think of it when you meet a body building champion and you tell him hey bro, you are weaker than an ant, what will he do? He will just smile and move away because he knows that he is a champion.

* Compensation: once I met a friend of mine and told him hey you seem to be upset today he replied, I never get upset and i never have problems. What is that situation? Is my friend a super hero who is always happy? Of course not, he is just compensating for his lack of self confidence. Every one compensate in his own way, one person may become arrogant, the other may reply using the never word just like in the previous example, others turn to perfectionists.\r Know that everyone of us have got his own weak points just like he has got his points of strength, you dont have to compensate for your weaknesses because no one is perfect.

* Body language : people who lack self confidence always take the defensive position ( arms folded and may be accompanied by crossing legs). Confident people rarely take this position unless they are offended or feeling cold so train yourself to forget about this position.

* Becoming a perfectionist : A perfectionist thinks that he lives in a perfect world so he tries to do everything perfectly, the problem here is that he may become upset if he got 99/100 in an exam!!!! , and that is because he thinks that unless he is perfect he may not become a worthy person, and so he is always upset because no one is perfect. Confident people are not perfectionists, they try to achieve success not perfectionism, if they got a B they may aim for an A but if they got 99% they wont aim for 100% .
