Setting Up A Secure Home Wireless Network - 2 Simple Steps To Protect Your Privacy

Securing a home wireless network is a two step process. The first step is to ensure network security by securing the wireless access point or router. All of this can normally be done through the web based software interface of the device, by typing in the default address of 192.168.0.1.

The first thing that needs to be changed is administrator username and password. Many networks are hacked into, simply because nobody bothered changing the default values. This is the same as most VCRs still blinking 12:00 because no one changed the time. Once this is done, enable MAC address filtering, and add computers based on their MAC address. This option will allow only those specified computers to connect to the network, but will not however guarantee total security.

The network SSID defines a name for the network. The default value of this should be changed to an obscure and long string. This value should be written down in a safe place and entered into the machines that are allowed to connect. Disabling the broadcast of the network SSID also provides an extra layer of security as the network will not advertise itself to outsiders.

Encryption should also be enabled. The default encryption is normally weak and can be easily broken. Normally WEP (Wireless Equivalent Privacy) is used for data encryption, however where available try and use WPA-PSK encryption. This method uses 256 bit encryption for transmitting data and the key also changes so provides a far more secure alternative to WEP.

Some routers have firewalls built in. Where available make sure that this option is enabled.

The second step of securing a home wireless network is securing each individuals PC. This can be done by installing a software firewall (this may not always be necessary if a hardware firewall is installed), antivirus software, anti-spam and pop-up blocking software. It is essential to keep this software up to date, as downloading the latest security updates for the operating system and web browser you are using.

You can manage your home network yourself if you have the time, or you can buy a home networking software that will monitor your network and alert you to any intruders or weak security measures for about $30. Whichever way you choose to do it make sure you secure your home wireless network.

WiFi Hackers and Net-centric Battlespace Security Discussed

Recently we read about the Hackers annual convention this year in Las Vegas, DEFCON. Indeed there were many people in attendance, including military onlookers who were both concerned about the future and intrigued by the hacking ability and skills of these brilliant and borderline criminals.

In fact the military learned that it was possible to receive a WiFi signal and that someone built a device that could read a signal 125 miles away. This means in wireless technology of this sort is used, whether encrypted or not, the enemy can sense us and locate our transmissions. It is like homing beacon. And before we know they are there they could fire first and we end up with casualties. In the new type of warfare, early detection and accurate firing will win. Just like our Apaches can see those Enemy Tanks and fire on them and they never even saw them?

One interesting issue would be that we could pre-plant WiFi systems in the sand, they think we are there, they fire on a Bluff of a \”Mirage Blue Force\” MBF, and we see the firing launch locations and shoot them first. Your basic Decoy city, you see sometimes having extra decoy networks can catch the hackers first, detect, track, identify, capture. So, sometimes having a duplication decoy system, you can use the system to catch the bad guys early on. We could deliver these devices and drop them in the sand via homing pigeon, which cannot be detected and they would turn on, on impact.

Hackers are an interesting group, interesting psychological study. Curiosity seems to be an innate human trait, these hackers are not DUMB PEOPLE. In fact they rank extremely high on IQ tests despite their Hollywood Stereotypes and persona. We can learn a lot from the Hackers, if we will listen and it appears they have everyones attention at the Pentagon right about now. Think on this.

The UK Broadband Revolution Continues

Who would have thought two years ago that we would be able to get broadband for free? Those were the days when it cost on average 25 for a 512k (per second) connection. Broadband was reserved for cyber geeks. The rest of us were happy enough with our super slow dialup connection.

A broadband revolution has been sweeping the nation ever since. Broadband speeds have increased dramatically and prices have plummeted. Now 512k is considered slow. Anything under 2Mb (per second) wont do. The cyber geeks are really moving into the fast lane, with download speeds of up to 24Mb available.

Prices for broadband fell significantly during 2005 and continue to do so. This led to more people signing up to broadband as it became more affordable. This, in turn, lead to more companies offering cut price broadband to attract those customers, which led to even more customers becoming interested. And the cycle continued. About 80,000 per week now sign up to a broadband package in the UK.

It has gone so far that you can now get broadband for free. If anyone mentioned free broadband 2 years ago, they would have been branded as being insane. Now it is a reality with TalkTalk offering free broadband to its Talk3 customers and Orange to its mobile customers. Cynics argue that it is not free, as you have to buy another service to get it. But even then, it is a damn good deal.

So where is the market going to go?

The rapidly changing world of telecommunications is going to force many of the smaller players out of the market. They simply will not be able to survive as margins are squeezed. Even the big players are finding the going tough. Telecom giant Cable and Wireless announced this week that it is broadband subsidiary, Bulldog, will no longer be offering broadband to residential customers.

Packages that include 2, 3 or even 4 products will become commonplace. Broadband providers have realised that they cannot make enough money from broadband alone to survive. So they are bundling broadband with other products, such as home phone, digital television and mobile. Market leaders such as TalkTalk, NTL and Telewest have been doing this for some time.

Broadband speeds will continue to rise as the technology moves forwards. This will lead to broadband becoming the centre of home communications. Your digital TV and home phone will be transmitted over a broadband connection.

The world of broadband has certainly come along way in the past 2 years, from a geeks product to mass market. The next 2 years will just as interesting, as broadband becomes the main communications platform in your home.

Where Next for Broadband?

The broadband market has undergone nothing sort of a revolution in the past 3 years. From a service dedicated to only the most committed of internet users, to a mass market service that everyone home in the UK should really have. The rate of increase has been nothing short of phenomenal.

But this broadband growth has caused a deep flaw in the market. Broadband providers knew that it was going to be very difficult to attract customers once they have signed up with a rival provider. So providers have been at all out war with each other to attract broadband adaptors while they are up for grabs. The war is being fought on two fronts. A price front and a technological front.

The war being fought on the price front simply involved providers having to constantly under cut each other. From 25 per month, to 20 to 15. Then it was 9.99, which was an amazing price front. Now, the price that we all expect is free. Yes, providers are giving broadband away for free. Of course, this means that you have to sign up to a bundle with at least one other, non-free, product. But we all use those products anyway, so there is not any extra cost.

The technological front involved providers having to offer ever-increasing speeds to stay ahead of their competitors. When broadband first came out, it was at a speed of 512kb, which was ten times faster than we were used to on dialup. Now you can reach speeds of 24Mb, some 480 times faster than a dial up connection. This need for speed does not come for free. Providers have had to invest in their own network with the very latest in technological advances.

So to succeed in the broadband market, providers have had to spend millions in technology and drop the price down to zero. Broadband is now nothing more than a loss leader. A product that is used to attract customers to another product that that company offers. But those other products, mainly home phone and digital TV, are also highly competitive. The intense pressure on providers to survive has lead to consolidations with bigger providers swallowing up smaller ones.

But where is the future heading? Well, the simple answer is even more consolidation. But not only will the bigger providers swallow up the smaller ones. The bigger providers are the ones that face the most pressure, with high overheads and angry shareholders. Bigger providers will start to absorb each other. This trend has already begun with two of the broadband powerhouses, AOL and Tiscali, putting their UKs operations up for sale. Only the strongest of the strong will survive. This will lead to less competition and therefore less choice in the long run. But then how much choice do we actually need. The market is likely to become more like the mobile market, which only has 6 main networks. Competition is still rife amongst those 6, so as consumers, we will still be able to demand the world from broadband providers.
